Breaking: The Kano Assembly is trying to change the law that overthrew Emir Sanusi II.

The Kano State House of Assembly has decided to change the legislation governing the appointment and deposition of the state’s traditional rulers.

In 2020, former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje utilized the legislation to overthrow Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano.

Hussien Dala, the Majority Leader and a representative of the Dala constituency, made the proposal to modify the law during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Assembly.

Prior to Sanusi II’s overthrow in 2020, Ganduje enacted a contentious bill that divided the former Kano Emirate into five separate emirates. Since then, a variety of state stakeholders have engaged in intense

discussion and division over the decision.

Advocates of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, a political faction affiliated with the State’s ruling party, have been outspoken in their demands for the restoration of Sanusi II and the dissolution of the recently

established emirates of Karaye, Rano, Gaya, and Bichi.

On the other hand, some factions argue that the new emirates should remain in place since they have a function and shouldn’t be dissolved.

A month before Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf took office in 2023, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the head of the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, made a hint about a review of the

emirates issue.

“We ran for office and are well-known in Nigeria, particularly in Kano. We demonstrated to the populace all the admirable initiatives we initiated while in administration, all made possible by God’s mercy. “Abba

Kabir Yusuf, the governor, and his team will continue where we left off,” Kwankwaso declared.

Kwankwaso emphasized that the incoming administration must make prudent decisions. “As the movement’s elders, we will never stop advising them to act morally. We made an effort to keep the topic

of the Emir’s removal quiet, but as you can see, the chance exists.

“We have faith that Allah will bestow wisdom upon the governor, Allah Kabir Yusuf, to address the issues raised in Kano State and ensure that everyone departs peacefully,” Kwankwaso said in closing.

More developments are anticipated in the next several days as the Kano State House of Assembly continues its legislative effort to modify the legislation.
