Suffering: Demonstrators obstruct a main route that leads to Abuja
Kaduna Road, which connects Kaduna and Abuja in Niger State, has been blocked by protesters.
This occurs three days prior to the ten-day nationwide protest that certain groups have scheduled to call for an improvement in Nigeria’s economic circumstances.
Protesters held signs that read, among other things, “Enough is Enough,” “We Are Not Slaves,” “Stop Anti-Masses Policies,” “Hardship Is Unbearable,” and “Fuel Subsidy Must Return.”
The demonstration organizers around the country are calling for a reduction in the cost of living as well as the reversal of some government policies, most notably the elimination of fuel subsidies.
Nigeria is experiencing the biggest cost of living problem in a long time. Following President Bola Tinubu’s removal of gasoline subsidies and naira flotation, which allowed market forces to determine the value of the Nigerian currency, food costs more than doubled.
The administration claims that the policies are necessary and would eventually benefit the people.
