What caused Maiduguri flood?
The flood in Borno was caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, which was purportedly filled to capacity for a week.
The dam last had such a problem in 1994, causing massive floods in Maiduguri, with about half of the town submerged.
Prof. Usman Tar, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, issued a message in the early hours of Tuesday headlined “Flooding Alert for River Bank Residents,” calling for quick evacuation.
He stated, “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the riverbank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties.” “The Alau Dam water has broken down another channel that is currently destroying farms and the water is heading toward the river bank.”
In separate statements on Tuesday, the CSOs described the situation as “very pathetic”.
Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of CSOs in the Lake-Chad Basin, stated that the fate of the animals who fled from Shehu Sanda Kyarimi Park, a prominent zoo in Maiduguri, was still unknown. “The Maiduguri bypass bridge has also been filled, and it is currently inundated.
The zoo road is being flooded, and water is rushing into the College of Health Technology in Maiduguri, where students have already been transferred to the School of Nursing. Also, the water is moving towards the Commissioner of Police Junction via Damboa road.
“Aside from wild animals escaping from the zoo, the Christians cemetery near Amb Baba Ahmed Jidda’s house in Old GRA has been submerged.” This offers significant public health risks. The government needs to initiate emergency reaction.”
