Aim Of This Fellowship
The Young Africans Research Academy Fellowship aims to develop the next generation of African researchers. This would enable them to solve Hugh’s pressing African problems.
For the first cohort, only 10 passionate young undergraduates in Ghana would be selected. These candidates should be those to succeed in a career in academia. Also, undergraduate students with a commitment to STEM research would be selected.
Mission Of This Fellowship
Despite making up around 17% of the world’s population, Africa produces less than 2% of global research output, underscoring the continent’s limited capacity for research.
The concentration of research efforts in a small number of nations, such as South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Algeria, further widens this disparity by providing few opportunities and little representation to many other regions.
High-quality research training and resources are severely lacking at the university level. Many up-and-coming scholars lack the thorough, moral, and hands-on training necessary to produce excellent, contextually relevant research because local research institutions are underfunded.
Africa thus has difficulties in producing a new generation of indigenous researchers capable of addressing the continent’s most urgent problems.
Our goal is to equip the upcoming generation of African researchers with the skills, resources, and guidance they need. We intend to ignite creative solutions that are closely linked to Africa’s particular opportunities and challenges by cultivating a vibrant, indigenous research culture. Application Phases
Each of the fellowship’s four phases is designed to enhance a particular area of research training:
Phase 1 (Months 1-2): Orientation and Foundation Building
Participants are introduced to research ethics and methodologies during this first phase, and they are paired with mentors to help them along the way.
Phase 2 (Months 3-6): Training for Research and Development of Proposals
Participants will explore sophisticated research methodologies, data gathering strategies, and the fundamentals of crafting a strong research proposal during this phase.
Phase 3: Self-directed Study and Guidance (Months 7–10)
Here, with ongoing mentoring and talks by guests to broaden their knowledge, fellows will apply their skills through practical research.
Phase 4 (Months 11–12): Research Presentation & Career Development
During the last stage, participants will share the results of their research, attend workshops on career development, and get advice on graduate school preparation.
