What Does the Scholarship Offer?
Up to ten (10) fully funded scholarships are available for eligible candidates to pursue the Master of Education in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the University of Exeter. Successful applicants will join the September 2025 cohort, receiving comprehensive financial support to cover tuition, living expenses, and more.

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Nationality and Work Location: Be a citizen of and work in a country categorized as Least Developed, Low Income, Lower Middle Income, or Upper Middle Income according to the OECD DAC list.
- Professional Experience: Have at least three years of full-time experience in TESOL or related fields after obtaining their first degree.
- Academic Qualification: Hold an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours or higher, or a relevant postgraduate qualification.
- University Admission: Submit an application to the University of Exeter for the MEd TESOL programme and obtain a student number, which is required for the scholarship application.
Steps to Apply
- Submit Your University Application: Begin by applying for the MEd TESOL programme at the University of Exeter. Use the “Apply Online” feature on their website. Once your application is received, you’ll be assigned an Exeter student number.
- Apply for the Hornby Scholarship: After receiving your Exeter student number, complete the scholarship application form. Include a detailed covering letter addressing the following questions:
- Key Challenges: Identify a major challenge faced by English language teachers in your professional context and explain how the MEd TESOL program can help address it. (Max: 400 words)
- Professional Contribution: Share an instance where you supported the professional development of other English language teachers. (Max: 400 words)
- Your Suitability: Highlight your skills, experience, and reasons for being a strong candidate for this scholarship. (Max: 200 words)
