Applications are now open for the Changing Narratives Fund 2024, a transformative initiative by the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program is designed to empower creators from diverse communities, including Indigenous, Black, racialized, ethno-religious minorities, people with disabilities, and the 2SLGBTQ+ community. It aims to strengthen inclusivity and representation in Canada’s audiovisual (AV) industry while fostering new economic opportunities for marginalized voices.

Goals of the Changing Narratives Fund

This fund has been established to:

  • Promote Professional Development: Support initiatives that focus on training, mentorship, and skill-building to enhance the number of qualified creators from underrepresented groups in the AV sector.
  • Strengthen Organizational Capacity: Enable organizations to design innovative programs that boost resilience and long-term growth within the Canadian audiovisual industry.
  • Authentically Represent Diverse Stories: Ensure the AV industry reflects the rich diversity of Canada’s population by showcasing authentic voices and perspectives.
  • Foster Economic Opportunities: Encourage equity in the AV sector by creating new pathways for financial growth and career development.
  • Enhance Public Awareness: Produce audiovisual content that helps all Canadians appreciate and celebrate the nation’s diversity.

Funding Details

Eligible projects can receive contributions of up to $300,000. This funding is available for initiatives with national, provincial/territorial, or regional impacts, offering significant reach and influence in the AV industry.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for funding, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Projects must directly support the inclusion and growth of underrepresented groups in Canada’s screen-based industries.
  2. Applicants should be Canadian-owned and controlled non-profit corporations with a primary focus on the screen-based sector.
  3. Organizations must be incorporated at the time of application.
  4. The applicant should have a history of compliance with the CMF (Canada Media Fund) requirements, ensuring good standing with past projects.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on the following factors:

  1. Identifying the Need: Has the applicant clearly outlined the specific problem their project addresses?
  2. Effectiveness of the Solution: Is the proposed approach impactful, and are the chosen facilitators or leaders suitable?
  3. Project Feasibility: Does the applicant have the experience, time, and resources necessary to execute the initiative?
  4. Third-Party Support: Is there confirmation of backing from other parties?
  5. Inclusion and Accessibility: Does the project incorporate meaningful inclusion practices such as support services and fair representation?
  6. Community Engagement: Does the applicant demonstrate strong ties to the participants and communities involved?
  7. Impact Potential: How well does the project promote diverse voices and an inclusive audiovisual landscape?
