About the Nyerere Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2020 to honor the scholarly contributions of Julius Nyerere, the first President of Tanzania and an alumnus of the University of Edinburgh, where he began his postgraduate journey in 1949. Initiated by Professor D. Bryceson, an alumnus of the University of Dar es Salaam, the scholarship aims to nurture talented Tanzanian graduates aspiring to follow Nyerere’s legacy. Since its inception, it has supported four exceptional candidates.
The scholarship covers:
- Tuition Fees for the MSc program.
- An annual stipend at the UKRI rate, disbursed monthly (2024/25 rate: £19,237, subject to confirmation).
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Nyerere Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Citizenship and Residence: Be a Tanzanian citizen residing in Tanzania.
- Academic Background: Graduated from the University of Dar es Salaam between 2022 and 2024, or set to graduate in 2025.
- Program Acceptance: Hold an offer for the full-time MSc Africa and International Development program at the University of Edinburgh.

Before applying for the scholarship, candidates must first submit an application for admission to the MSc Africa and International Development program at the University of Edinburgh. Please note:
- Allow up to five working days after submitting your admission application for system checks to be completed and for access to the scholarship portal to be granted.
