Bayero wins as Court awards N10m Against Sanusi II, Kano Gov’t

The 14th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has been granted N10 million in compensation by a Federal High Court located in Kano, over the order that had him arrested and removed from his palace.

Remember that Bayero was deposed by Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, last month and given orders to turn over any public property he owned and leave the palace within 48 hours?

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the fourteenth Emir of Kano, was elevated to the position of sixteenth Emir of the Emirate by Governor Yusuf.

However, Bayero—who had left Kano when the order was given—came back and took up residence in the small palace in the Nasarawa district of Kano City.

The 15th Emir of Kano had headed for the court to challenge Governor Yusuf’s action.

The Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Commissioner of Police in Kano, the Attorney-General of the Federation,

the Attorney-General of Kano State, the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Army,

the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy were among the respondents in the lawsuit.

In his ruling on Friday, Justice Simon Amobeda declared that his court was authorized to take into account the application pertaining to the enforcement of fundamental rights.

Additionally, he asserted that Bayero is free to travel and reside anywhere in Kano or in Nigeria. Nonetheless, the court decided against evicting Sanusi II from the Gidan Rumfa palace.

Ibrahim Isa Wangida, the Kano State government’s and Sanusi II’s attorney, saw the ruling as a win for the Emir Sanusi II

and his supporters since the court upheld the legislation that called for Sanusi’s reinstatement.

He did, however, state that he will speak with his client about whether to file an appeal against the N10 million award made against them.

Abdulrazaq Ahmad, Bayero’s attorney, claimed he was vindicated by the ruling, stating that his client’s fundamental rights

had been violated or were likely to be violated and that the court had inherent jurisdiction to hear and decide the issue.

According to him, the ruling has prevented any security agency or the state government from violating the emir’s rights.
