Capital Oil CEO is dead, his family announced.
Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, a federal legislator representing the Anambra South Senatorial District, has died. His age was 52.
The politician, who flew to the United Kingdom after falling seriously ill a few weeks ago, died on Saturday morning in a London hospital.
His condition apparently worsened in the last 48 hours. The cause of death was unknown as of Saturday morning.
Ubah was elected Senator in 2019 on the Young Progressive Party’s (YPP) platform and will be reelected on the same platform in 2023.
He defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) early this year and has expressed an interest in running for governor of Anambra State in the upcoming election.
Biography
Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah (September 3, 1971 – July 27, 2024) was a Nigerian politician, entrepreneur, and businessman who served as a Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate until his death on July 27, 2024 in London.
He was born as the first of seven children to Mr. and Mrs. Alphonsus Ubah in Otolo, one of the four quarters of Nnewi in Anambra State, Nigeria.
Because his parents were unable to meet their children’s academic and material needs, Ubah dropped out of Premiere Academy in Lugbe, Abuja, to acquire a trade at an early age. He has taken numerous local and international business courses and seminars on leadership and business management.
Ubah became a major exporter of motor tyres and spare parts throughout West Africa, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, before expanding into European markets such as Belgium and the UK.
He was the CEO of Capital Oil, which he established in 2001. Capital Oil’s facilities and outlets are primarily located in Southeast and Southwest Nigeria, including one of the largest tank farms for petroleum product storage and distribution in Lagos.
He founded The Authority Newspaper, a daily newspaper in Nigeria. On October 15, 2015, Ifeanyi Ubah’s journal, ‘The Authority,’ became a daily publication.
Following the purchase of Gabros International Football team, Ubah formed Ifeanyi Ubah F.C., a Nigerian Premier League football team. He also established the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, which was named after him.
He equally contested in the 2014 Anambra governorship election for the Labour Party but lost.
On February 24, 2019, Ifeanyi Ubah was declared the winner of the Anambra South Senatorial elections by the Young Progressive Party, but he later defected to Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressive Congress.
Ubah was married to Uchenna Ubah, a business administration graduate from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria, with whom he had five children.
In September 2022, while on his way to Nnewi, Ubah was attacked by gunmen in Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State; his convoy was fired at, and at least five people were killed, including two police officers.
Ubah survived the attack, reportedly protected by the bulletproof car he was riding in.
