Drake wagers $300,000 on Canada defeating Argentina in the Copa América
Drake, a well-known hip-hop artist from Canada, has placed a daring gamble of $300,000 (about N465 million) on Canada to beat Argentina in the Copa América semifinal in 2024.
Drake stands to collect a substantial $2.88 million from the high-stakes wager should Canada triumph over Lionel Messi and the favored Argentine team.
Drake teased his social media followers on Tuesday about his wager, writing, “This could get Messi,” along with an emoji of the Canadian flag.
Unexpectedly, Canada’s run to the semifinals in this year’s competition has been successful.
The team, led by head coach Jesse Marsch, came into the Copa América with a FIFA ranking of 11th out of 16 teams.
With the goal of winning its first major championship since the 1990 North American Nations Cup, Canada is making its debut in the esteemed South American competition.
Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 in their group stage matchup on June 20. This will be the last Copa América meeting between Argentina and Canada.
There has only ever been one previous meeting between the two countries, a friendly in 2010 that Argentina won 5-0.
Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, has said that Messi, who just got well from a thigh injury, will participate in the semifinal.
The 37-year-old great played the entire 90 minutes in Argentina’s quarterfinal victory over Ecuador, but he missed the team’s last group match against Peru.
