Background Of This Program

As extreme weather conditions like floods and droughts become more common and severe worldwide, young people are among those most susceptible from the growing effects of climate change.

But they also contribute a wealth of vitality, inventiveness, and digital expertise that can help create communities that are more resilient and strong.

Nevertheless, young people’s opinions are frequently ignored in discussions and decision-making related to climate change. Young people’s vulnerability and potential make it evident that involving them in global climate solutions is not only important, but important.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a powerful call to action in 2022, asking the international community to guarantee that by 2027, everyone, everywhere, is safeguarded by efficient early warning systems.

However, only roughly half of the countries in the world today claim to have extensive systems in place to handle a variety of hazards. Youth can make a significant contribution in this area, particularly in promoting drought and flood resilience through the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) program.

Young brains are frequently overflowing with original concepts and creative ideas. Their capacity to rethink established structures and investigate novel approaches is precisely what is required to address the climate crisis from fresh perspectives.

Youth-led water initiatives are being supported by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The 2018 UN Youth Strategy, which acknowledges the critical role that youth play in forming a more sustainable future, is in line with this work.

Objectives Of The Program

The Global Integrated Flood and Drought Management Competition is for the following objectives:

• To ensure that communities have the needed resilience to flood and drought events through the contribution of the youth in these events. The youths would help in providing knowledge in the preparedness, response, and adaptation in combating these natural occurrences.

• To highlight to the world the impact that youth can have when they are involved in community flood and drought disasters.

• To provide the opportunity for youth to be able to create, implement, and establish projects for long-term purposes. This is to ensure that youths are involved in climate action efforts and they receive the required recognition for it.

Benefits Of This Grant

The contribution allocated for the selected project in the event of unforeseen circumstances is 3,000 CHF.

Eligibility For The Grant

Here are the eligibility criteria for the Global Integrated Flood and Drought Management Competition;

• The proposed project must be headed by a youth. The youths can be students or young professionals. As such, the age requirement is that the youth should be below 35 years.

• The project must contribute to reducing the impact of flood and drought.

• The project is expected to be innovative and have clearly identified objectives.

• Should be one that can be achieved within 9 months.

• Must be sustainable and scalable as time passes.

Criteria For Selection

Proposed projects that would be selected are those that have the following:

• The project should be implemented in rural areas that are under the requirements of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDSs). The major beneficiaries of this project should be those who are vulnerable in these states.

• Must support gender transformative approaches to solve flood and drought events.

• Projects must consist of locally used materials and knowledge.

• It can also be replicated and scalable.
