Focus of the Mastercard Foundation Scholarships
Makerere University is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program’s second cohort.
Over a ten-year period, this program aims to increase access to high-quality higher education and provide full undergraduate and graduate scholarships to 1,000 young Africans, especially those from low-income families.
Starting with the 2025–2026 academic year, Makerere University will continue to provide these opportunities at its main campus through the Private Sponsorship Scheme in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation.
The university will give out 190 undergraduate scholarships and 11 master’s scholarships for this upcoming intake.
This year, the scholarship is focused on targeting young Africans in sub-Saharan Africa who are facing barriers to finishing their university education.
Who are those that are eligible?
Those who are eligible for this scholarship must meet the following criteria:
• Must apply to run their university program at Makerere University for the 2025/2026 university session.
• Candidates should be those who are currently facing hardships that threaten their education.
• Those who apply should be those who are not pursuing or completed their Masters program.
• Applicants must have completed their undergraduate program at a university in Africa.
• Should not be beneficiaries of any scholarship.
• Applicants should be those who have shown leadership commitment or community service.

• Candidates that would be selected should be those who have selected programs under the coverage of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
• If you’re a refugee, you must possess the Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.
• Applicants who fall under the Refugee and Students with Disability should be less than 40 years of age before the deadline.
