A security alert has been sent to nationals of the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada in Nigeria, alerting them to the possibility of violence during the August 1, 2024, #EndBadGovernance rally.
Citing past experiences, the three nations issued separate travel advice warning their nationals to stay away from locations where clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators could happen.
As Nigerians get ready to demonstrate against what they see as poor government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), is under a lot of pressure this week. If there isn’t a last-minute alteration, the public’s general displeasure portends a conflict with the federal government.
The government’s concern is highlighted by the flurry of emergency meetings that include the heads of security agencies, state governors, ministries, the president, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the National Security Adviser, and APC leadership.
Youths and civil society organizations have been mobilized by the protest organizers, who are part of the #EndBadGovernance movement, to demonstrate against economic problems and the purported shortcomings of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In its caution, the US Mission in Abuja asked Americans to stay away from the rallies, encouraging them to avoid crowds and protests and to follow local media for updates. The advisory noted the possibility of physical altercations, traffic jams, roadblocks, and checkpoints. It said,

In a similar vein, the UK High Commission issued a warning that big cities like Abuja and Lagos may see protests between July 29 and August 10. British citizens were cautioned to stay away from big gatherings, be informed through media reporting, and use care, as violent protests have happened before without much notice.
“Political rallies, protests, and violent demonstrations can take place with little notice,” the advice stated. Find out which spots to avoid. If you’re going to events that draw big crowds or visiting crowded public spaces, exercise caution.
Never attempt to navigate a dangerous or intimidating situation on your own. Reverse course and head for safety.
The Canadian government also informed its citizens about the protests, advising them to anticipate delays in public transportation and traffic, as well as the possibility that the demonstrations could suddenly become violent.
They recommended being alert, following the directions of local authorities, and keeping a close eye on the local media for updates. “Nationwide demonstrations are planned between July 29 and August 5, 2024,” the alert stated. They could suddenly become violent and interfere with traffic and public transportation.
These recommendations are a result of growing worries about the anticipated statewide protests and how they might affect Nigerian security and safety.
