The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is inviting applications for its African Scholarship Programme 2026—an exclusive opportunity for early career researchers from Africa. This fully funded research program allows scholars to advance their research while benefiting from the resources and networks at the Nordic Africa Institute in Sweden.
About the Scholarship
The programme is designed to support early career scholars based in Africa by providing access to a stimulating research environment where they can refine their work. Scholars gain entry to NAI’s specialized library, academic mentorship, networking opportunities, and an office space, all tailored to facilitate in-depth research on contemporary Africa.
This initiative aims to strengthen knowledge production on Africa while fostering collaboration between African and Nordic research communities.
Scholarship Duration & Restrictions
Selected scholars will spend approximately three months (90 days) at the Institute. However, applicants cannot schedule their stay between June 15 – August 15 or December 15 – January 15, as academic institutions in the Nordic region operate at reduced capacity during these periods.
What the Scholarship Covers
Recipients will benefit from:
- Round-trip economy airfare to Sweden.
- Accommodation provided during the stay.
- Daily stipend of 400 SEK (~40 USD) for living expenses.
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (~250 USD) to cover initial costs.
- Dedicated workspace with a desk and computer at the Institute.
- Full access to NAI’s library resources, along with access to Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
Who Can Apply?
The programme is open to early career African researchers working in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities, focusing on contemporary African issues. Additionally, research should align with the UN Agenda 2030’s core principles, particularly within NAI’s five key impact areas.
Eligible applicants fall into one of the following categories:
- PhD Candidates – Must be full-time staff at an African university or research center, currently enrolled in a doctoral program within Africa, and without access to international scholarships.
- Postdoctoral Researchers – Must have completed their PhD within the past four years.
NAI prioritizes gender balance and diverse regional representation and encourages research focusing on gender studies and the role of women in society.

- Updated CV (including a list of publications, with links where applicable).
- Research Project Outline (5 pages):
- A well-structured research proposal detailing objectives and methodology.
- Work Plan (1 page):
- A detailed plan outlining research activities and expected outcomes during the stay.
- Reference Letter:
- A signed letter of support from a Head of Department or senior scholar confirming the applicant’s current affiliation and research field.

- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Individuals currently or previously employed by NAI are not eligible.
