Receiving the president of Senegal, Tinubu asks for cooperation in the fight against terrorism and human trafficking.

In order to successfully address the issues facing the area, President Bola Tinubu called for a realignment of purpose and structure in West Africa at his reception with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal

on Thursday.

At a meeting with the president of Senegal at the State House, President Tinubu stated that cooperation among the countries of West Africa is necessary to tackle the multifaceted issues of poverty, human

trafficking, banditry, and terrorism.

He counseled the region’s leaders to make the people the center of governance, pointing out that democracy loses its essence when the people are not the center of attention.

The president emphasized that constitutional order, democratic governance, and democratic ideals are inviolable and need to be upheld.

He added that for democracy to survive, important institutions and principles like the rule of law and the judiciary must be upheld.

Senegal demonstrated constitutional democracy to the rest of Africa and the world. Meeting you here and getting to know the aspirations and hopes of our youth is a pleasure. You are a fantastic fit here.

In the history of constitutional democracy, especially in West Africa, this is a pivotal moment. It’s amazing what you have started, a battle grounded on freedom, remarked President Tinubu.

The president recalled the lengthy history of collaboration between Senegal and Nigeria and called both countries “brotherly.”

“Our relationship is brotherly.” Democracy is something that interests us both. We have to put in a lot of effort if we want democracy to be durable for the benefit of our people.

“I’m happy to see that you are a bright example of tolerance, tenacity, and dedication to democratic principles.

In order to make our people the center of our democratic commitment, we must collaborate. We all share your belief in the sovereignty of Africa. But if we are upholding unlawful takeovers of power and breaking

the law, how can we serve our people and make them the center of our democracy?

“I’m extending an invitation to you to work with me and get to know those other brothers as the ECOWAS Chairman. to convince them to rejoin the group.

“We’re going to keep collaborating. We have similar upbringings, and we’ll keep supporting and advancing democratic government. Together, we must be able to create the freedom we hold dear in the

areas of development, economic expansion, and other areas of governance. It is up to us to reassure our people and act accordingly.

“We have to eradicate poverty, terrorism, and banditry from our society in addition to eliminating human trafficking. President Tinubu stated, “That has to be our commitment and area of focus.”

President Faye said in his speech that Senegal and Nigeria share common goals, values, and difficulties, and that the two countries have had cordial relations ever since the 1960s.

“Our countries should benefit from the positive relations we have and the relationships between our private sectors,” he stated.

The newly elected president of Senegal demanded that the Nigeria-Senegal joint commission be revived in order to improve bilateral ties in the fields of trade, diplomacy, and other sectors.

Speaking about ECOWAS, President Faye stated that member state ties may be improved for the community’s growth by using President Tinubu’s knowledge and expertise.

“ECOWAS is the beacon of successful regional integration in Africa and globally. It is something we owe to the founding fathers of the community, and I have no doubt that you want to continue this legacy of

integration. The union is going through a rough patch, but not everything is lost.

“I know I can rely on your wisdom and experience, as the leader of this great African nation, and the more recent example of Senegal; so that together, hand in hand, we can grow together, and that we can discuss

with our brothers and convince them to come back into the fold. To come back and share our common democratic values and what we stand for.

“Your wisdom and your democratic values should be an asset to that vision, and my youth and determination can also be an asset. If we come together, with all these assets and advantages, I am

convinced we can open a window of opportunity to discuss.

“United, we are stronger. Faced with common challenges, such as human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and all other challenges, we need to show resolve to confront these challenges so that economically we

can thrive and satisfy the wishes of our people,” the Senegalese President said.

Senegalese president awarded honourary citizenship of Abuja

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has conferred honorary Abuja citizenship on President Faye.

Mr Wike had earlier represented President Tinubu to welcome the Senegalese leader upon his arrival at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday.

The minister honoured President Faye with the title of honorary citizenship of Abuja, along with the symbolic key to the city.

While conferring the title, Mr Wike extended to the Senegalese president all the rights and privileges of a citizen, emphasising the enduring friendship and cordial ties between Nigeria and Senegal.

President Faye was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by some government delegation.
