Reintroducing the national anthem might have stopped banditry, according to Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, stated that if the nation had kept its national song, “Nigeria,

We Hail Thee,” banditry and instability would have been avoided.

Remember that the National song Bill 2024 was approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives to reinstate the 1978-abolished national song,

“Nigeria, we hail thee.”

The measure to replace “Arise, O Compatriots” with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the national anthem was approved by the National Assembly.

President Bola Tinubu gave his consent to the measure, which swiftly passed both the first and second readings on the same day and became the nation’s new anthem.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the Nigeria Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies,

Akpabio predicted that the restored national anthem would promote love, unity, and patriotism among Nigerians.

According to Akpabio, people who argue that the reintroduced anthem is a remnant of colonialism are legally illiterate a

nd have no understanding of the history of the nation.

The president of the Senate claims that a group composed of Nigerians was established in 1959,

heard suggestions for the hymn from all over the world, and authorised its reintroduction at that time.

“The other significant bill that the National Assembly signed is the return to our previous national anthem,” he stated.

Many people are unaware that in 1959, a panel composed of Nigerians was established to gather opinions from around the globe.

Therefore, those who argue that we are introducing a colonial anthem ought to study the background of “Nigeria, we hail thee.”

“We probably wouldn’t have banditry in Nigeria today if we had stuck to that anthem because you wouldn’t want to kill your

neighbour if you considered him to be your brother.”

Additionally, Akpabio disclosed that over 30,000 Nigerian students have been chosen to receive financial aid through the student loan programme.

According to the Senate President, the Student Loan Bill makes it possible for the nation’s poor and disadvantaged y

oungsters to pursue higher education without having to worry about the cost.

One of the most significant pieces of legislation approved by the nation’s tenth Assembly, in Akpbaio’s opinion, was this measure.

“The bill sent to us by President Bola Tinubu was one of the most important bills for the tenth Assembly,”

he declared. The Student Loan Bill makes it possible for less fortunate and vulnerable Nigerian students to pursue higher education.
