The school building collapsed on Friday morning around 8:30 am while the teachers and students were in their classes.
Giving an update on the incident, state Commissioner for Information Musa Ashoms said in a statement on Friday that 120 people were still trapped under the rubble.
The Plateau State Government released a statement saying, “Students and teachers at Saint Academy Jos are still being evacuated to various hospitals within Jos due to the tragic incident where a building collapsed, resulting in casualties.”
“The government describes the incident as preventable, pointing to the school’s hazardous position close to a riverbank and its substandard construction.
“Yet, we applaud the actions taken by NEMA, SEMA, the Red Cross, and security organizations to rescue stranded children and get them to hospitals.”
According to reports, hospitals have received orders from the government to prioritize care without requiring payment or paperwork.
“All major hospitals in Jos have also been ordered by the Commissioner of Health to attend to the victims,” he continued.
“The administration upholds Executive Order 003 as inviolable, emphasizing the value of following safety regulations. In order for the Jos Metropolitan Development Board to stop such instances in the future, schools experiencing similar problems are asked to close.
According to Sunday Àbdu, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, 17 people have died as a result of the collapse, she said in an interview following their rescue operation.
“We have finished the rescue mission, at least for today,” stated the SEMA director, who called the situation tragic. We’re about to leave this location.
It is still a truth that the number of casualties fluctuates. There are 43 patients undergoing treatment at Bingham University Teaching Hospital Jos and 13 deceased bodies.
“We have more than 40 patients receiving care at OLA Specialist Hospital. There are forty patients receiving treatment at Plateau Specialists Hospital and four deceased bodies.
“I don’t currently have the number of casualties that were evacuated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital.”
