After Monday’s rains, some areas of Abuja are under water.
Heavy flooding was triggered by a Monday morning downpour at the Trademore Estate in Lugbe, which is located along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Road in Abuja.
The estate is home to a number of civil servants and is frequently impacted by water.
A local citizen who recorded the
flood on camera was heard pleading for assistance from the Federal Government and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.
She stated in the video that the flood carried two persons away. The FCTA hasn’t, however, affirmed this.
Since 2022, the FCT Administration has made multiple attempts to demolish estate portions that are allegedly located on flood plains.
However, the exercise was put on hold because of a lawsuit that locals filed against it.

mentions that thunderstorms and foggy conditions were expected in several regions of the country from Sunday to Tuesday, according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, or NiMet, on Sunday.
Early-morning thunderstorms were predicted by NiMet to pass over the central states, including the Plateau, Nasarawa, Federal Capital Territory, Benue, and Niger states.
There is a chance of thunderstorms over portions of Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day.
The FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) responded to the prediction by stating that, in response to warnings of
potential flooding in the area, it has put its local emergency management committees in each of the six area councils and its flood vanguards on notice.
“The FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, has placed its vanguards and the local emergency management committees in
the six area councils on alert following early warnings of possible flooding in the Territory,” said Nkechi Isa, Head of the Department’s Public Affairs, in a statement.
According to a weather forecast provided to FEMD by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), isolated thunderstorms are
predicted to occur today over portions of the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau.
“NiMet urges the public to take appropriate precautions and warns that in regions where thunderstorms are anticipated to occur, high winds may precede the rainfall.
Similar weather is also anticipated by NiMet for Tuesday, June 25, and Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Meanwhile, regions in 15 states are expected to see significant rains that may result in flooding between today and tomorrow, according to the
Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) Center.
It is anticipated that severe floods will affect states including Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna. But floods may not occur in the FCT.
“The department has implemented mitigation measures around the city, according to Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, the
Ag. Director General of FEMD, in response to the early warning on neighboring states.
“Mrs. Wenegieme said that local divers have been assigned to risky areas, and the Search and Rescue Team is on high alert.
“In the event of an emergency, the Ag DG urged residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number.”
