Tinubu appoints 39-year-old Maduekwe, others as the DG of the Climate Change Council

President Bola Tinubu has authourized the appointment of   Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), subject to the NCCC Supervisory Council’s confirmation.

According to a statement released on Sunday by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, this was in line with the President’s pledge to actualize Nigeria’s green industrial vision,

increase investor confidence, and unleash sustainable economic value through various climate finance instruments,.

The President has also given his approval for Dr. Maduekwe, 39, to assume the role of Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

Maduekwe has a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s degree in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Hull (UK).

With over 15 years of national and international experience, Dr. Maduekwe is an expert in developing climate policies and implementing projects.

She formerly served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for the Climate Parliament. Climate Parliament is a global, multipartisan network of legislators aiming to address the climate catastrophe and expedite the transition to renewable energy.

Furthermore, the President has authorized the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement.

He has been assigned to the NCCC secretariat, where he will be in charge of all things pertaining to Stakeholder/Donor Relations and Climate Finance.

Additionally, the President has given his approval for Shelleng to join the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions,

the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen, and the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP) as Secretary.

Prior to being appointed as Senior Special Assistant to the President, Shelleng, who graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA)

from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, held executive positions in a number of financial institutions, including Head of Business Development at the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company PLC (NMRC).

The President has also authorized the appointment of Olamide Fagbuji,44years to the position of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations in the Office of the President.

His assignment is to supervise the digitalization of a new open procurement procedure and a cross-departmental procedural

optimization initiative at the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) Secretariat.

Prior to his most recent position as the Technical Adviser to the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) on

Policy Research and Strategy, Fagbuji held the position of Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters during the previous government. He works as a computer scientist and policy analyst.

“The aforementioned appointments are effective immediately”.

It also stated that “In pursuit of the nation’s aspiration on green industrial development and climate action for sustainable growth and

national prosperity, the new appointees are expected to bring their expertise and discipline to bear in these very important assignments.”
