Woman, Corps Member Saved From Collapse of Abuja Building
Two people who were stranded inside the collapsed building in Abuja—a woman and a member of the National Youth Service Corps—have been pulled alive from the debris.
According to reports, a portion of a two-story structure in Kubwa, Abuja, along the Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki Way, Phase 2, Site 2, collapsed on Saturday at around six in the morning.
The structure, which was once the Halal Hotel, was renovated into a hospital and is currently being used as a residential apartment complex with roughly 45 separate rooms.
FCT Emergency Management Department (FEM), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) pulled the last rescued victim—identified as a corps member—unconsciously from the debris.
The corps member was transported in an ambulance to the Kubwa General Hospital. Abdullahi Masud and his female guest were discovered to have been hospitalized after managing to flee the building before to its collapse.
Our reporter was able to catch him and the visitor at the hospital’s emergency room, where they were receiving care.
About 15 residents were able to flee the building before it fell, according to information provided to Daily Trust by building security guard Ibrahim Bitrus.
Speaking about the incident, Masud also mentioned that one of his neighbors had earlier alerted him about a cracked wall near the building’s staircase.
Later, when I was taking my morning bath, I became aware of an odd sound coming from various locations throughout the building. I made it out completely nude.
“I found out that there was just one woman left stranded at the time since other people were also able to flee. It was about that time that my girlfriend was admitted to the hospital.
Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, the Acting Director General of FEMD, who was present at the scene of the disaster, declared that search and rescue operations would persist until first responders reached ground zero.
